Founded in 1984 by Anna Stuart Tovini and Vincenzo Chiarandà, Premiata Ditta has questioned questions of authorship and individuality, evoking the corporate logic of production and profit in order to subvert it. The artists have participated in Biennials, Quadrennials and international exhibitions. In 1995 they set up UnDo.Net, an independent participatory model of immaterial value creation that is still freely accessible as an online archive. In recent years, Premiata Ditta has organised ‘Studi Festival’ (until 2017) and ‘Walk-In Studio’, an initiative that involves and coordinates dozens of authors in the creation of exhibitions and events within artists' studios and in various urban spaces in Milan. In the last three years, Premiata Ditta has been conducting "Frottage. A sociable apparatus": a project developed in collaboration with associations and residents of three different districts of Milan, featuring exhibitions, books, and performative interventions.
The initial connection between the two artist couples—Anna and Vincenzo, and Paola and Eckehard—was rooted in a shared vision: they view artistic identity not as a fixed entity but as an ongoing process. By embracing identity as a continuously evolving phenomenon, they open avenues to explore and experience different facets of the self. French philosopher Paul Ricoeur refers to this concept as a narrative identity, which is perpetually redefined through the recounting of one's life story.
For their participation in xilo project, the artists, who have worked under the name Premiata Ditta since 1984, selected a group of objects from their studio worktable and created a dynamic, fast-paced drawing of them. This practice involved engaging with objects chosen and accumulated over time by various artists who participated in the xilo project.The work was completed in a single evening under dim lighting from suspended spotlights and mobile phone torches, with an intense conversation providing the backdrop.
With the artistic duo Premiata Ditta, art becomes a state of consciousness.
Fondata nel 1984 da Anna Stuart Tovini e Vincenzo Chiarandà, Premiata Ditta ha interrogato le questioni dell'autorialità e dell'individualità, evocando, per sovvertirla, la logica aziendale della produzione e del profitto. Gli artisti hanno partecipato a Biennali, Quadriennali e a mostre internazionali. Nel 1995 hanno dato vita a UnDo.Net, un modello partecipativo e indipendente di partecipazione di creazione di valore immateriale ancora oggi liberamente accessibile come archivio online. Negli ultimi anni Premiata Ditta ha organizzato “Studi Festival” (fino al 2017) e “Walk-In Studio”, un'iniziativa che coinvolge e coordina decine di autori nella creazione di mostre ed eventi all'interno degli studi d'artista e in vari spazi urbani di Milano. Negli ultimi tre anni Premiata Ditta sta conducendo “Frottage. Un dispositivo socievole”: un progetto sviluppato in collaborazione con le associazioni e gli abitanti di tre diversi Municipi di Milano, con mostre, libri e interventi performativi.
L'empatia iniziale tra le due coppie di
artisti Anna-Vincenzo e Paola-Eckehard nasce da un'idea comune: non
vedono la propria identità artistica come una forma definita, ma
come un processo in atto. Se l'identità è vista come un fenomeno in
continuo sviluppo, si possono esplorare e vivere diversi aspetti del
sé. Il filosofo francese Paul Ricoeur parla di una "identità
narrativa" che viene costantemente ricostituita attraverso il
racconto della propria storia di vita.
Per la loro partecipazione
a "xilo project" la coppia di artisti, che dal 1984 lavora
con il nome Premiata Ditta, sceglie un gruppo di oggetti presenti sul
tavolo di lavoro dello studio e ne compone un disegno dal ritmo
serrato: lavora insomma sugli oggetti scelti per lavorare e
accumulati nel corso dei giorni dagli artisti che hanno partecipato a
"xilo project".
L'opera viene realizzata in una sera,
con la scarsa illuminazione dei faretti sospesi e delle torce dei
telefoni cellulari, e con il sottofondo di un'intensa conversazione.
Con il duo artistico Premiata Ditta l'arte diventa uno stato di coscienza.

Die anfängliche Empathie zwischen den beiden Künstlerpaaren Anna–Vincenzo und Paola–Eckehard beruht auf einer gemeinsamen Idee: Sie verstehen ihre künstlerische Identität nicht als feste Form, sondern als einen fortlaufenden Prozess. Wird Identität als ein sich ständig entwickelndes Phänomen betrachtet, lassen sich unterschiedliche Facetten des Selbst erforschen und leben. Der französische Philosoph Paul Ricoeur spricht von einer „narrativen Identität“, die durch das Erzählen der eigenen Lebensgeschichte kontinuierlich neu gebildet wird.
Für ihre Teilnahme an „xilo project“ wählt das Künstlerduo, das seit 1984 unter dem Namen Premiata Ditta arbeitet, eine Gruppe von Objekten vom Arbeitstisch des Ateliers aus und komponiert daraus eine dichte Zeichnung: Sie arbeiten also mit den Gegenständen, die die Künstler:innen, die am „xilo project“ beteiligt waren, im Laufe der Zeit zum Arbeiten genutzt und angesammelt haben.
Das Werk entsteht an einem einzigen Abend – bei schwachem Licht von Deckenstrahlern und Handy-Taschenlampen, begleitet von einer intensiven Unterhaltung. Mit dem Künstlerduo Premiata Ditta wird Kunst zu einem Bewusstseinszustand.
