Paul Goodwin / XI 2024 ... Seeing takes time

Born 1951 in Hull, Yorkshire. Graduated in Fine Art (University of Leeds - B.A. hons Fine Art 1974; University of Sussex M. Ed A.D. 1979) Paul Goodwin spent the period 1974-1984 between London and Africa, working as a lecturer in painting and photography. In Italy since 1984, Goodwin found himself involved in the artistic environment of Milan, a city where he ran a studio in the historic ‘Casa degli Artisti’ in Corso Garibaldi until 2007. In 2010, he rented a studio in Docks Dora in Turin, where he worked until 2013. In recent years, he taught ‘Painting Techniques’ at the NABA Academy in Milan. Since 1992 he has lived and worked in Roccaverano.

The woodcut is preceded by a fleeting encounter in a place that could not be more different and at the same time more familiar. On the one hand, the former studio of artist Paul Goodwin and now the ‘Casa degli Artisti di Milano’, which hosts the ‘Xiloproject’ residency in the same place for a couple of months. The question of who visits who in this studio thus becomes an opportunity to get to know each other.
The motif of the graphics becomes a vision in time. Goodwin says: ‘The windows have the importance of feeling me in this space”. The view outside reveals the changes Milan has undergone over the course of globalisation and similarly the interior has been transformed in meaning and form. In Goodwin's drawing, the outside view opens onto a rising backside. His words come to mind: ‘Painting is more alchemy than science’. The motif must be heard to be understood.

Ed A.D. 1979) Paul Goodwin vive il periodo 1974-1984 tra Londra e l’Africa, lavorando come docente di pittura e fotografia. In Italia dal 1984, Goodwin si trova coinvolto nell’ambiente artistico di Milano, città in cui gestisce uno studio nella storica “Casa degli Artisti” di Corso Garibaldi fino al 2007. Nel 2010 prende in affitto uno studio in Docks Dora a Torino, dove lavorerà fino al 2013. Negli ultimi anni ha insegnato “Tecniche della pittura” all’Accademia NABA di Milano. Dal 1992 vive e lavora a Roccaverano.

Paul Goodwin - Vedere richiede tempo

La xilografia è preceduta da un incontro fugace in un luogo che non potrebbe essere più diverso e allo stesso tempo più familiare. Da un lato, l'ex studio dell'artista Paul Goodwin e oggi la “Casa degli Artisti di Milano”, che ospita nello stesso luogo per un paio di mesi la residenza “Xiloproject”. La domanda su chi viene a trovare chi in questo studio diventa così un'occasione per conoscersi.
Il motivo della grafica diventa una visione nel tempo. Goodwin dice: “Le finestre hanno l'importanza di sentirmi in questo spazio”. La vista all'esterno rivela i cambiamenti subiti da Milano nel corso della globalizzazione e analogamente l'interno è stato trasformato nel significato e nella forma. Nel disegno di Goodwin, la vista esterna si apre su un fondoschiena che si alza. Mi vengono in mente le sue parole: “La pittura è più alchimia che scienza”. Il motivo deve essere ascoltato per essere compreso.

Ed A.D. 1979) lebt Paul Goodwin von 1974 bis 1984 zwischen London und Afrika, wo er als Dozent für Malerei und Fotografie tätig ist. Seit 1984 lebt er in Italien und ist in die Kunstszene Mailands eingebunden. Dort betreibt er bis 2007 ein Atelier in der historischen „Casa degli Artisti“ in der Corso Garibaldi. Im Jahr 2010 mietet er ein Atelier in den Docks Dora in Turin, wo er bis 2013 arbeitet. In den letzten Jahren unterrichtete er „Maltechniken“ an der NABA (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti) in Mailand. Seit 1992 lebt und arbeitet er in Roccaverano.

Paul Goodwin – Sehen braucht Zeit

Der Holzschnitt geht einem flüchtigen Treffen voraus, an einem Ort, der nicht gegensätzlicher und zugleich nicht vertrauter sein könnte. Auf der einen Seite das ehemalige Atelier von Paul Goodwin, heute die „Casa degli Artisti“ in Mailand, die für einige Monate das Residenzprojekt „Xiloproject“ beherbergt. Die Frage, wer hier eigentlich wen besucht, wird zum Anlass für ein gegenseitiges Kennenlernen.
Das grafische Motiv wird zu einer Vision in der Zeit. Goodwin sagt: „Die Fenster sind wichtig, damit ich mich in diesem Raum spüre.“ Der Blick nach draußen zeigt die Veränderungen, die Mailand im Zuge der Globalisierung durchlaufen hat – ebenso wurde auch der Innenraum in Bedeutung und Form verwandelt. In Goodwins Zeichnung öffnet sich der Blick nach außen auf ein sich hebendes Hinterteil. Mir kommen seine Worte in den Sinn: „Malerei ist mehr Alchemie als Wissenschaft.“

Das Motiv muss gehört werden, um verstanden zu werden.
